Henry R. Luce Gallery
Literati Modern Bunjinga from Late-Edo to Twentieth-Century Japan,
The Terry Welch Collection at the Honolulu Academy of Arts
A sequel to the 2002 exhibition Taishô Chic: Japanese Modernity, Nostalgia, and Deco, this is one of the first major exhibitions in the United States on Japanese literati painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Featuring works by some of Japan's most talented artists in formats ranging from monumental screens to intimate albums, it is a stunning assembly of works that speak to the human spirit.
This exhibition and its catalogue are supported in part by the Blakemore Foundation. Literati Modern is officially endorsed by the Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu.
