A cache of costume jewelry from Rajasthan will be at the World Art Bazaar. You’ll find earrings and earrings-and-necklace sets that make stunning statements for a pittance. This decolletage dazzler looks like a million, but will set you back only $59. The luxe brocade silk scarf, also from India, is available in The Academy Shop now ($129). They’re going fast.

In six weeks you can see the booty Academy Shop Manager Kathee Hoover acquired during her annual month-long summer buying trip for the World Art Bazaar. As usual her keen eye picked out a souk-full of available-nowhere-else-in-Hawai’i items, from Indian costume jewelry fit for a Bollywood production to Zuni fetishes—tiny carvings of semiprecious stones by Zuni Indians, pictured above actual size. Turquoise bear by Lena Boone ($45), jet corn maiden by Amos Poocha, malachite frog by Bremette Epaloose ($47). Talk about the perfect stocking stuffers. Photo by Shuzo Uemoto.

In preparation for the annual World Art Bazaar held in November, Academy Shop Manager Kathee Hoover has started getting ready for her month-long buying trip. The bazaar is exactly what it sounds like—a sale of carefully selected antique and contemporary handcrafted items from around the globe. (Pictured are some of the cool items she scored from last year’s trip.) Hoover goes on a “warehouse crawl” of more than a hundred importers who specialize in goods from specific regions, such as Thailand and Peru. Her main criteria when buying items is the quality of the design and value for Honolulu customers. With that in mind, she is trying something new this year—she is accepting requests. Dying for a string of Indian rubies or a Bundu helmet mask from Sierra Leone? Email Kathee at khoover@honoluluacademy.org by July 8. She leaves on July 9. Be sure to include your phone number and email address along with your request. Hoover says she will try her best to locate the items.

The World Art Bazaar opens on Nov. 29. Members get a sneak preview on Nov. 28—you can get in only with a valid membership card. Want to join to get a jump on the holiday-shopping hordes? Get the info online or call 532-8724. Before I started working here I thought the World Art Bazaar was a bunch of old-lady dust-collector stuff. Boy was I wrong. You should see the items this year—I’m just WAITING for the 28th so I can put dibs on these beautiful water-buffalo-horn bracelets from Vietnam. And they’re under $40. Don’t they look just like tortoise shell? (Which is illegal.) And I’m saving up for the three-strand blue-sapphire necklace from India. Check back tomorrow to see what a silk wrap from Uzbekistan looks like.

Academy Shop Manager Kathee Hoover has acquired an alluring assortment of glass beads. Just try to resist the Ali Babaesque twinklers that will be at this year’s World Art Bazaar, such as the multistrands of light blue Indonesian glass beads ($39), West African green faceted-glass beads ($67.50), and red Czech glass beads from Nigeria ($24.50). The World Art Bazaar isn’t just cute tchotchkes. Check out this elegant crewel jacket from India. It took a woman, like, a year to complete the detailed stitchwork on supersoft wool. A bargain at $395. There are only two crewel-work jackets (both large), so come early. The Bazaar runs Nov. 29-Dec. 14; Tuesdays-Saturdays 10am-4:30pm, Sundays 10am-5pm; at Art Center at Linekona. You can park in the big lot behind Linekona, entrances on Beretania and Young streets, $3 with validation.
Spice up your holidays with some global chic—jettison those tired old thermos-like balls from the drugstore and replace them with these dazzling papier mâché tree-enhancers from India. You’ll find them at the World Art Bazaar, Nov. 29 to Dec. 14 at the Art Center at Linekona. Information: 532-8700.
Just a little over a month until the World Art Bazaar opens its doors—for the 27th time. Each week we’ll give a sneak peek at items that you’ll find at the Bazaar, which runs Nov. 29 to Dec. 14 at the Art Center at Linekona. (Wait til you see the multistrand blue sapphire necklace from India…) Here are adorable little woven baskets from Rwanda ($12.50). Inside is a piece of paper with a Rwandan saying on it (as well as the odd Gandhi chestnut). There’s something for every budget at the Bazaar, and whatever you pick, you know it’s not available at any other store on the island.
