Last chance to see the first glimpse of the Richard Lane Collection, which the Academy acquired in 2003. It’s a hoard of Japanese art and as a team of experts go through it, delightful discoveries are being made—like this painting by Okumura Sekiran (1834-1895). Scott Johnson, professor at Kansai University in Osaka and a Japanese [...]

It’s the last weekend to see “Richard Lane and the Floating World“—which is filled with delightful paintings like this one of otafuku, or “pleasantly plump women,” by Kanamori Nanto (1823-?). The lines are so self-assured—you can see how these characters are the ancestors of today’s manga stars.

The Honolulu Academy of Arts has joined the Brooklyn Museum and Wikipedia project Wikipedia Loves Art—a photographic scavenger hunt that is happening around the world, from the Academy to London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. On Feb. 14, 15 and 27 (including ARTafterDARK: Mughal), grab your digicam and come over to photograph works of art—we supply [...]

There was an opening at the Academy Art Center at Linekona’s 2nd floor gallery, so we have a last-minute show up—screenprints by Honolulu artist Bebba Vamvounakis, on view through Feb. 13. The HPU Gallery may be a glorified lobby on the Windward side, but with artist Sanit Khewhok as curator, it’s THE place to see young local (or at least residing on O‘ahu) artists’ new work. In the past couple years the space has seen shows by Christopher St. John, Rujunko Pugh, Alan Konishi, Jennifer Callejo, [...]

Don’t let last year’s lackluster UH graduate art show (it was marked by poor execution and lack of well-thought-out ideas) keep you from seeing what the students are [...]

Rudimentary video of the Jan. 7 opening of “Traces and Trajectories: Current Work by Ten Korean-American Artists.” It’s a vibrant contemporary show, addressing dualities/identities/and many other things, with standout work by Sumita Kim, Kloe Kang and others. There’s a brief interview with Honolulu’s Jinja Kim in it, talking about her seductive work “Bojagi Town.” The Flip’s uberbasic [...]

Alain Robbe-Grillet is best known as the creator of the Nouveau Roman and screenwriter of Alain Resnais’ cinegeek wetdream ‘Last Year at Marienbad‘ (there would have been no Calvin Klein Obsession ads without it)—but he directed his share of milestone avant garde films. Often considered the best of them is ‘L’Immortelle,’ which screens through Friday. [...]

When O‘ahu-based quilter and Academy docent Charlene Hughes got a phone call at 7 a.m. last month to see if she was interested in being in a quilt exhibition to mark the inauguration of President Barack Obama, she thought it was a joke. When she realized guest curator Roland L. Freeman wasn’t kidding, she jumped [...]
