JULY AT
THE DORIS DUKE THEATRE

PLEASE VOTE FOR ME
Director: Weijun Chen
China, 2007, 52 mins.
Learn more about the film.

pleasevote

An experiment in democracy is taking place in a third grade classroom in China. For the first time, students will be able to elect their own class monitor. Should China ever adopt democracy, this surprising, insightful documentary seeks to determine how it would be received. Traditionally appointed by the teacher, the class monitor holds a powerful position. The teacher has chosen three candidates: current class monitor Luo Lei (a boy); Cheng Cheng (a boy); and Xu Xiaofei (a girl). The candidates must perform in three events: a talent show, a debate, and speech delivery. The campaign takes its toll on the tyro politicians. Viewers are left to decide if the experiment in democracy has been “successful” and what it might mean for democracy in China. Please Vote for Me challenges those committed to China’s democratization to consider the feasibility of, and processes involved in, its implementation. This film won the Special Jury Prize at the 2008 Taiwan International Children’s Film Festival, and the Sterling Feature Award at the 2007 Silverdocs Film Festival.

The 2nd Annual Surf Film Festival
JULY 10—24

 surf film fest

This year’s surf film festival includes four highly anticipated Hawai‘i premieres that have been the buzz in surf media.
We’ve also included two favorite films by acclaimed surf filmmakers Jack McCoy and Taylor Steele.
Each film offers an original perspective on surfing, ranging from a focus on athletic surfers, to a meditation on the connection between surfing and music, and a brand new release about women surfers.

the present

In the late ‘90s a few young, independent filmmakers used vintage Bolex 16mm film cameras to document modern-day surfing in an old-school style. Director Thomas Campbell is among a small number of purists using film instead of video. According to him, The Present’s basic premise is, “Taking a view into our lives as surfers on this planet, and showing that this moment—in our surfing lives right now—is a gift.” All of this happens to the backdrop of a timeless, down-tempo soundtrack that has been a hallmark of Campbell’s other works.

HAWAII PREMIERE
MUSICA SURFICA
Director: Mick Sowry
Australia, 2009, 46 mins.
See the trailer.

musica surfica

This stunning documentary follows world-renowned violinist Richard Tognetti as he explores new boundaries in experimental surfing and music. The life-long surfer also happens to be artistic director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and in Musica Surfica, he teams up with influential surfer Derek Hynd, who is also interested in the connection between surfing and art. They are joined by top surfers and musicians on remote King Island in the Southern Ocean, where they ride boards based on 300-year-old Hawaiian designs, or on unconventionally finned surfboards, for one of the first “finless” surfing events since the days of the ancient Hawaiians. At the same time, Richard and surfer members of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, along with guest musicians,  perform for the people of King Island. It is an unlikely, electrifying combination of music, which has since toured the world to much acclaim.

Sipping Jetstreams

Several years ago, fed up with traveling to the same old places to document surfing, photographer Dustin Humphrey and filmmaker Taylor Steele had an epiphany. Though they’d spent much of their lives in airplanes, hotels, rental cars, and aboard boats, had they really seen the world? What was beyond Hawaii, Australia, and Tahiti? The pair scrapped the old surf-travel strategy of “fly in, surf, fly out” in favor of true cultural exploration in places like Cuba and Egypt. They were “sipping jetstreams.”

 green iguana

THE GREEN IGUANA
Director: Jack McCoy
Australia, Hawaii, and Indonesia, 1991, 60 mins. with extra material

The Green Iguana is the second film director Jack McCoy made for Gordon Merchant, the owner and founder of Billabong (the first film was Bunyip Dreaming). The film stars Michael “Munga” Barry, Luke Egan, Sunny Garcia, Mark “Occy” Occhilupo, and introduces Brendan “Margo” Margieson and Peter King. All of the action takes place on the back of an iguana who lies in the water and creates little islands from the spikes along his tail. Creating a fun-filled, action-packed surf adventure was McCoy’s objective, and from all reports, he succeeded on location in Australia, Hawaii and Indonesia. McCoy writes, “I filmed every shot on 16mm film and it’s all rockin’ and no talkin’!”
Pioneering surf film director Jack McCoy will introduce his film at the July 19 7:30 screening.
• Sunday, July 19 at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.
• Tuesday, July 21 at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

HAWAII PREMIERE
HARVARD BEATS YALE, 29-29
Director: Kevin Rafferty
USA, 2009, 105 mins.
See the trailer.

Harvard Yale

The Village Voice film critic J. Hoberman raves that this film is “the best football movie I’ve ever seen.” The acclaimed documentary recounts the fabled 11/23/68 football game between longtime arch rivals Yale and Harvard—both undefeated that season. Yale’s quarterback was the legendary Brian Dowling, the inspiration for the Doonesbury character B.D. Players interviewed in the film include Tommy Lee Jones (whose college roommate was Al Gore). New Yorker film critic Richard Brody writes, “sports may not always be a metaphor for life, but in Kevin Rafferty’s refreshingly austere documentary, about a legendary 1968 college football game, it comes off as a surprisingly meaningful part of it.”

HAWAII PREMIERE
THE WINDOW
Director: Carlos Sorín
Argentina, 2008, 85 mins.
In Spanish with English subtitles

Window

In remote Patagonia, it is a significant day for 80-year-old Antonio—his estranged son is coming to visit. All must be perfect. There will be a champagne toast; an embrace; warm words that may finally bridge the gap between them, but the bedridden Antonio must wait. He looks out his window and sees light and life, the past and the present, while sensing the future. He leaves the house, unseen by his caretakers, to take what might be a last walk in his fields, inhaling the scent of the land that had been his life. Distinguished Argentine filmmaker Carlos Sorín (Bombón, El Perro) once again trains his camera on the small stories written by life, on the humanity behind human beings. By casting the great Uruguayan writer Antonio Larreta in the lead role, Sorín establishes a link between fiction and reality that makes the protagonist’s fears, hopes and wishes even more palpable.
