CITYSCAPES: A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTAL FILMS ABOUT ARCHITECTURE
This series of experimental short films is being presented in conjunction with the exhibition, "Hawaiian Modern: The Architecture of Vladimir Ossipoff".
"Pleasures of Urban Decay" (18 mins.), directed by Sam Ball, is a noirish short film revealing cartoonist Ben Kachor's world by mixing city footage with the comic strip and overlaying it with bursts of jazz; "Sway" (33 mins.), directed by Richard Sandler, is a brilliant exploration of the subterranean world of the New York subway; Eric Dyer's film "Copenhagen Cycles (6 mins.), is a whimsical mixture of collage and film footage of a city scape.

This film is being presented in conjunction with the exhibition, "Hawaiian Modern: The Architecture of Vladimir Ossipoff."
Louis I. Kahn, one of America's most revered architects, died in a bathroom in New York's Penn Station in 1974. He left behind a series of eminently modern buildings that emulate the monumentality and serenity of the ancient ruins that inspired him. This powerful and moving film, directed by his illegitimate son Nathan, traces Louis I Kahn's rise to fame, his secrets, and his eventual decline.

But ordinary heroes fought back to safeguard, rescue and return the millions of lost and stolen treasures.

ANOTHER MAN'S GARDEN

A young girl who wants to study medicine in Mozambique faces obstacles far beyond the distractions of her boyfriend and her family. A moment of weakness or an error in judgement can cost her a place at the university, an irretrievable loss in a country with so few opportunities for women. Richly atmospheric and full of telling details, this film illuminates the prevailing attitude that educating women is like "watering another man's garden".
The short film "Riding with Sugar," directed by Suna Gonera (South Africa, 2005, 10 mins.), will precede the feature film.

Set in war-torn Algeria in the 1990s, this film follows two women on the dangerous search for the younger woman's husband, a journalist whose commentaries have caused his disappearance. Sahraoui uses specific and deliberate pacing to reinforce the constant forward movement of the character's search.

Set during the Iran/Iraq war of the 1980's, ethnic conflict between Kurds and Iraquis sets the stage for a road story. A Kurdish soldier conscripted to serve in the Iraqui army is given orders to return the body of a fallen soldier to his family. When he is paired with an Iraqui driver with a prejudice against Kurds, tensions flare.
This film will be preceded by the short film: "A Little Bit Higher," directed by Mehdi Jafari (Iran, 2005, 12 mins.).

OF LOVE AND EGGS

This film focuses on a working-class community in Jakarta during the Labaran holiday. Beneath its benign and gently comic surface, the story is about the place of Islam in the lives and minds of its believers. The narrative, involving three young children, includes eggs, a prayer rug, a mosque's cupola, and the universal desire for love and belonging.
This film will be preceded by the short film "Broad Day," directed by Rajeev Ahuja (India, 2004, 11 mins.).
