Asian Art [est. 1927; total works: 16,537]

The Asian art collection consists of over 16,000 objects by artists and craftspeople from China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia and India. The largest number and the most strength within the collection are the Chinese and Japanese holdings which include paintings, sculpture, ceramics, lacquer ware and prints.

There are approximately 690 Japanese paintings ranging from 12th century handscrolls to 20th century screens and scrolls. The Chinese painting collection consists of approximately 625 paintings including 115 paintings which date from the Ming dynasty or earlier.

A noteworthy center for the study of Chinese art, the museum collections are especially rich in Buddhist cave sculpture of the 4th through 10th centuries, ceramics from the Neolithic through Qing dynasties, paintings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, Chinese furniture of the 16th to 19th centuries, as well as bronze ritual vessels, sculptures, and jades of the Shang, Zhou and Han dynasties.
