OUR TOURS:  The MLC offers several Guided School Tours, which are one-time visits to the Academy. We also have the Ambassador Outreach Program, which is our unique three-part program that includes two classroom visits and an interactive museum tour. All school tours support the HCPS III Benchmarks in a variety of subjects. You can also take your students on a Self-Guided Tour of the Academy.

Discover animals in paintings, sculpture, the decorative arts, and other media. This tour provides an entertaining introduction to an art museum as it focuses on the depiction of animals by artists from many cultures.

Creatively Christmas (Gr Pre-K-2)

(November 30 to December 18, 2009)
Explore the visual arts story from the Renaissance to Medieval times, that depict the first Christmas. Learn how and why artists make paintings and sculpture and what symbols they use. After the tour, attend a theatrical magic show with one of Santa’s helpers. View a flyer here.

Kamishibai (Gr 1-2)
1 hour - includes interactive elements
Students will love to hear the Kamishibai or “paper drama” stories told from a small stage on the back of a bicycle in our Chinese courtyard. This form of storytelling dates back to the 12th century Japan when monks bicycled from town to town, gathered an audience by selling candy, and then taught valuable lessons through the stories. A tour of the highlights of Japanese art follows the story.

Our Changing Environment (Gr 3-8)

What can we learn by studying landscape paintings? Explore places around the world by investigating the Academy’s collection of landscapes. Compare the environments of cities, countrysides, and seascapes, and learn how landscapes have changed over time. Students will see how Hawaii, America and Europe looked long ago and will understand that artists document and express changes in the world.

Everyone loves to hear a great story and works of art are visual illustrations for some of the best! Through the Academy collections, students will “read” the artists clues to dramatic stories of cultures from around the world and throughout time. The tour also includes an opportunity for students to have fun creating their own stories based on several works of art.

Let’s Sketch (Gr 4-12)

This interactive tour allows students to explore the variety of drawing techniques that artists utilize to create art, as they look and draw several works of art in the Academy collection. Tour sketchbooks will be given to the students to take home.

A popular “introduction to the museum” tour, Treasures focuses on outstanding works in the collection, from Neolithic to contemporary, by looking at painting, sculpture and functional objects from around the world. Students will engage in art through fun activities and discussions.

Hokusai’s Summit (Gr 4-12)

(September 29 to December 31, 2009)
Explore Hokusai’s masterpiece, The Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, and learn about the religious, artistic, and cultural influences on these works. See how woodblocks are made and create haiku poetry to reflect your experience.

Art and Life in Colonial America (Gr 5)

Our Fall semester dates for this tour are currently booked; we do offer this tour in the Spring semester. Request Forms will be available on December 7.

This popular tour includes an activity in the gallery of early American art to investigate portraits, landscapes, and furniture, as well as a stimulating hands-on experience in a recreated colonial home, complete with an authentic 17th century fireplace. Students will discover the hardships of colonial life as they examine and discuss how objects were made and used for cooking, dressing, sleeping, and learning.

Museum Enrichment Program (Gr 5)
3 hours

During an hour-long guided tour, your students will learn how to look at many of the important paintings in the museum. They will discuss the elements of art and the tools and materials that the artists used to express their ideas and feelings.

In the two-hour studio session that follows the tour, the Academy instructor will help students mix colors to create a painting. This "hands-on" painting activity allows each child to express his/her own ideas and feelings and to use the information gained from the guided tour.

World Religions in Art (Gr 6-12)
1.5 hours
Art is not always just a pretty picture, but can be an expression of religious beliefs and stories from around the world. Students will see art as visual communication for Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism and Shamanistic beliefs.

Global Village (Gr 6, 11)
1.5 hours
This tour looks at the ideas and objects exchanged between Western and Eastern cultures. These cross-cultural exchanges are evident in religious sculptures, silk clothing, ceramic tea service, decorative arts and paintings. The works of art discussed are from the 1st to 19th century and were transported along the Silk Road or shipped West to satisfy the European craze for anything Asian.

Discover the Academy’s most important works of art and their interesting stories. Learn how artists of different cultures and time periods created a variety of art, using all kinds of materials, for all kinds of purposes.

The Academy’s Chinese Garden sets the mood for a broad overview of the museum’s outstanding collection of secular and religious works of art in a variety of media spanning 5,000 years. You can request your tour to include all of the following galleries, or focus on specific areas: India, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Korea.

Museum visitors explore the cultural heritage of the world’s oldest continuous civilization as reflected in the Academy’s comprehensive collection of sacred and secular Chinese art from the Neolithic age to the present. Painting, ceramics, textiles and/or furniture will be discussed.
   
Vogue in Japan Art of Japan
1 hour
Shinto and Buddhist art, brush paintings, pottery, lacquer, decorative screens, ink paintings, scrolls, and selections from the Academy’s extraordinary collection of woodblock prints are highlighted in this overview tour of the traditional arts of Japan.

Sculpture, ceramics, and decorative art from Cambodia, Thailand and Burma, as well as Indonesian traditional arts are presented ranging in date from the fourth millennium B.C.E. to the 18th century C.E.

This tour highlights a selection of works from the Academy’s collection and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. The art found in the Islamic world reflects the aesthetics and cultural traditions, as well as the religious heritage of many countries with Muslim populations.

The Academy’s collection of European art encompasses objects from ancient to modern times, spanning thousands of years. Your tour will include art from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, sculpture, painting and tapestries from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, decorative arts and prints, and well-known paintings by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters.

This tour highlights the development of American art from the colonial period to
Contemporary times. Portraits and landscapes by early American masters suggest the strong character and romantic vision of our forefathers. Works by major 19th and 20th century artists illustrate important trends in recent years.

The Art of Hawai‘i gallery offers an overview from pre-contact to the present, including indigenous art, kapa, landscapes, Volcano School painting, portraits and decorative arts. Objects from Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia tell us about traditional ceremonies and rituals, ancestor worship, and the power and status of their former owners.

Do you really call this art? Explore the styles, materials, and techniques of contemporary artists as you learn about the developments in art in the 19th and 20th centuries that influenced these artists to create their unique, and often surprising works of art.

You will visit images of deities, temple guardians, celestial beings, and real and fantastic beasts as you discuss the three indigenous religions of India, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
