About the Film:

Director: Richard Press
France/United States, 2010, 84 min.

A sartorial aesthete who lives like a monk, Bill Cunningham, the New York Times “On the Street” photographer, has been renting the same small studio above Carnegie Hall for 50 years, never eats in restaurants and gets around on a worn-out bicycle. In contrast to this Spartan existence is the extravagant cast of characters Bill documents, ranging from downtown New York eccentrics to uptown fixtures of New York culture (Tom Wolfe, Anna Wintour) and pillars of “New York Society” (David Rockefeller, Brooke Astor, Annette De La Renta) who for the first time have agreed to appear in a movie because of their regard for Bill. Talking heads include Hawai‘i son Harold Koda, who is chief of the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute.

Cunningham's documentation is a poignant, ongoing chronicle of the intersection of fashion and society in New York over 50 years—in effect, a portrait of New York City itself. Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Sydney International Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival 2010 and Official Selection at the Hawaii International Film Festival 2010.
